This photograph shows a microscopic green alga called Micrasterias. Compared to many other green algae they are relatively big and can span up to one-third of a millimeter across when fully grown, barely noticeable to the naked eye. Their cells show a remarkable symmetry. Each cell consists of two half-cells being mirror images of one another. Micrasterias reproduce by dividing its cell into two equal parts. After division, a new half is growing back to restore each part’s original and symmetric shape. By continuous division, the population can grow and conquer its environment. In this image, the upper half of the cell is less developed than the bottom half due to a recent cell division. The upper half is still growing and has not yet reached its full glory. The photograph was captured using fluorescence microscopy. The chlorophyll within the cell fluoresces in red when illuminated by ultraviolet light. The size of the Micrasterias is about 0.29 mm from top to bottom. “Divide and Conquer” This photograph shows a microscopic green alga called Micrasterias.
