Micromolluscs are shelled mollusk which is extremely small even as adults. Many are only about 2 to 3 mm and a few have shells which are as small as one millimeter. Despite their tiny size, many of the shells have an elaborate sculpture as can be seen in this photograph. Because of their small size, micromollusks often remain unnoticed. It often requires great care, patience, and persistence to find micromollusks. Working with them usually also requires special techniques and special equipment compared with that needed for most of the larger-shelled species. This shelled mollusk was found in a marine water sample collected from a fish farm in Stockholm. The photograph was captured using fluorescence microscopy and illuminated by ultraviolet light. Microalgae and cyanobacteria that grow on the surface of the shell are autofluorescing in red and orange under the ultraviolet light. The shell autofluoresce in blue. The full shell is about 2.2 mm and the visible area in this photograph is about 1.3 mm from left to right.
