This photograph shows a microscopic green alga called Micrasterias. Compared to many other green algae they are relatively big and can span up to one-third of a millimeter across when fully grown, barely noticeable to the naked eye. Their cells show a remarkable symmetry. Each cell consists of two half-cells being mirror images of one another. Due to their majestic size and intricate beauty, they are sometimes referred to as the queen of algae. Micrasterias are not to be expected in polluted and nutrient-rich waters that grow thick of other single-cell algal groups. In contrast, Micrasterias have to be looked for in clear waters, preferably in those with luxurious, submerged vegetation of aquatic plants. A place suitable for a queen. The photograph was captured using fluorescence microscopy. The chlorophyll within the cell fluoresces in red when illuminated by ultraviolet light. The upper half of the cell is less developed than the bottom half due to a recent cell-division. The upper half is still growing and has not yet reached its full glory. The size of the Micrasterias is about 0.22 mm from top to bottom.
